Chapter 7

Ulian received a report stating the Gnosis was about to engage a destroyer. He clenched his fist. How did the Kalrawv Group manage to hide an entire capital ship from their sensor sweep? It has to be the interference in this system. The weather or maybe they’ve come up with some technical way to do it.

Regardless, the interruption to the operation annoyed him.

Ulian turned to Morala. “The Gnosis is under attack by a destroyer.”

“What?” Morala immediately turned to her screen, staring at the scan. “How did those bastards … And we have our own problems.” The ship shook from a massive barrage as their opponents opened up on them. Erda initiated more evasive maneuvers, jostling them in their seats. “Viran, contact the Gnosis and see if they require aid.”

“I’m afraid we’re in no position to provide it,” Ulian said. “Unless they maneuver toward us that is. Then perhaps …” He hummed. “We have the remaining destroyers, the bombers and that battleship that’s remaining out of range, waiting to have us whittled down before engaging.”

“They’ll run,” Morala replied. “I can almost guarantee it. They have no desire to push us and they want to play the victim. They can’t do that if they are dead.”

Ulian tilted his head. “Look at the tactics. Exhaust our fighters, challenge them with bombers, hit us with the destroyers … They’re not running right now and they could while we’re busy. No, they believe they can win this fight or they wouldn’t be sticking around. However, they’re playing a dangerous game. Even if we lose, they will be vulnerable.”

Viran spoke up, “Commander, the Gnosis states they have their situation under control. I am also picking up a spatial anomaly consistent with hyperspace. It appears Kalrawv may have been able to call for reinforcements after all.”

“Impossible!” Morala shook her head. “We jammed them the moment we arrived.”

“I agree.” Ulian spoke more cautiously about it. “I have a bad feeling this is a third party.”

“The Tol’An?” Morala asked.

Ulian shrugged. “There aren’t many others who would want in on this action. It’s disturbing though. How would they have known to come here at all? Unless they discovered how to get the information out of their Orbs.” He stared at the floor in thought until the tremble of the ship brought him back to the moment. “Doesn’t matter now how they know.”

“Quite right.” Morala turned to Erda. “Have you targeted the next destroyer?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’m doing a dance over here.” Erda paused. “A second volley is on the way. They survived my first pass with some good evasive maneuvers. I don’t think they’ll make it this time.”

The weapons discharged, blasting through the enemy shields and obliterating the hull. In the same moment, the other five destroyers unleashed another attack. Erda hit his panel hard and the ship lurched downward, crushing everyone into their seats with the sudden motion. Ulian winced and remained tensed in anticipation of a blow that never came.

“Full evasion!” Erda clapped his hands once before tapping his screen with swift fingers.
